动词vary有两个常见意思。下面就其用法及其与意思相近的动词change，alter， convert，modify的不同进行分析。
1.vary指“相异，不同，有别”，多指大小、形状等的不同。比如：The students' work varies considerably in quality.学生作业的质量甚是参差不齐。
As they're handmade, each one varies slightly.由于它们是手工制作的，每一件都会略有不同。
2. vary指“（根据情况）变化，变更，改变”。比如：The menu varies with the season. 菜单随季节而变动。Prices vary according to the type of room you require.价格随所要求的户型而有所变化。
Class numbers vary between 25 and 30.班级的数目从二十五到三十不等。“What time do you start work?” “It varies.”“你几点钟开始工作？”“没准儿。”
3.使用要点：vary from 表示“不同”。比如：The text varies from the earlier versions. 这一文本有别于那些早期的版本。A baby's need for food can vary from day to day.婴儿对食物的需求天天都在变化。
Tastes and preferences vary from individual to individual.人的爱好和选择各不相同。The rent varies from 25 yuan to 60 yuan.房租从二十五元到六十元不等。
4. vary与change，alter， convert，modify的不同
当vary表示“变化”时，与change，alter, convert, modify意思相近，但含义和应用侧重点不同，考试常考这几个词的不同用法。
change多指本质和外形上的变化，或表示质、量和程度上的变迁。Leaves change colour in autumn.树叶在秋天改变颜色。They change the desert into the farmland.他们变沙漠为良田。
alter指“改动，变样”，多指修改衣服，局部、表面、细节变化，属于不影响总的结构的改变。比如：I will ask someone to alter my dress to fit me.我得让人把衣服改一下，以便合适我穿。
In doing translation, one should not alter the meaning of the original to suit one's own taste.翻译时，不能根据自己的口味改变原文的意思。
convert(to)指“转变，变换”，特别指局部的改变，增加、改变事物的用途，有时指在宗教、党派、信仰等方面的改变。比如：If you try to convert him, you could find he just walks away.如果你想让他改变信仰，他会扭头就走。
modify指“修改”，这是一个用法较正式的词，多指功能上而不是外表和形式上的变化。比如：The software we use has been modified for us.我们使用的软件已按我们的需要作过修改。
vary侧重种类繁多的变化。比如：Mother often varies our diet.母亲常常变换食谱。
